This book is not like the usual picture book and every page gives a sense of peace and serenity.
Charlie Mackesy, who has been a cartoonist for the Spectator and a book illustrator for Oxford University Press. Charlie’s work features in books, private collections and public spaces, including Highgate Cemetery in London, in hospitals, prisons, churches and university colleges around the UK, and in women’s safe houses around the world.
He says the straightforward, heartfelt conversations between the characters in The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse were drawn from, “conversations I’ve had with my friends about what life really means, what’s important; it was a way for me to think aloud on paper with words and drawings".
The conversations between the four characters in this book, have been shared thousands of times online.
Should you walk away with a shrug of your shoulders and the words "ho-hum" on your lips after reading this book, then it will be your great loss. Read it again, yet another time. It's possible to read the same page, during more than one sitting, and experience different results.
The book isn't a story with a plot, it's a book full of wisdom and kindness. One powerful life reminder after another unfolds with few words. The writing and pictures make the book seem like someone sat down and wrote you a nice letter.
