FS Extra 👣 What school forgot to teach

Some lessons are only learned the hard way. Here are a few worth discovering sooner. Life lessons that often make more sense later.

If you only read one thing today make it this

Some of the most valuable lessons in life are rarely taught in a classroom.

They tend to arrive through mistakes, disappointments, awkward moments, difficult jobs, unexpected setbacks and the wisdom that only comes from experience.

Recently I revisited an older article that shares advice for teenagers. As I read through it again, I recognised how much of it is still equally relevant for adults.

It explores the gap between how we imagine life works and how life often works in practice. Some of the lessons may challenge you. Some may make you smile. A few may even make you uncomfortable. That is often where the growth happens.

Explore what school missed

At the page for this article is also Sir Ken Robinson's famous TED Talk, "Do Schools Kill Creativity?" His message reminds us that education is about far more than memorising information. It is about learning how to think, adapt, create and navigate an unpredictable world.

Many people leave school with knowledge. Fewer leave with resilience, self responsibility, emotional maturity and practical wisdom. Those qualities often determine how well we handle the challenges that follow.

The article explores dozens of observations about work, responsibility, gratitude, relationships, setbacks, success and personal accountability. Some of them will probably make you nod in agreement. Others may make you stop and think. A few may even challenge beliefs you've held for years.

See the lessons that still matter today

Sometimes growth comes from finding advice you agree with. Other times it comes from examining advice you disagree with and discovering why.

Either way, it encourages reflection. It helps us step outside our assumptions and consider perspectives we may have overlooked.

If you have teenagers in your life, this article could spark some worthwhile conversations. If your teenage years are long behind you, it may still offer reminders that are surprisingly relevant today.

Several of the ideas touch on themes that remain timeless. Taking responsibility for your choices. Learning from mistakes instead of hiding from them. Treating people well. Staying humble. Continuing to grow even when life becomes uncomfortable.

Read the full list and decide for yourself

Whether you agree with every lesson or only a handful of them, I think you'll find plenty to reflect on. Sometimes a single idea is enough to shift the way we approach the next stage of our journey.

I hope you enjoy exploring these thought provoking life lessons as much as I enjoyed revisiting them.
