[FS] Thea's personal tip for organizing your email inbox
Published: Wed, 05/11/16
Hi wayfarer,
I receive emails from many different sources.
Sometimes I get 100's of emails a day.
In case you're in a similar situation,
I have a very handy tip (particularly if
you use Gmail).
This is worth doing! :)
All emails I receive to go into specific
folders, which is kind of like a resources
folder for me. This makes things easy when
I am looking for emails from certain people
or for certain topics.
To set that up, and to ensure that I always
get the emails I want, I always take the
following 6 steps with the first email from
anyone new. I've done this for a long time
now, so my emails are now well sorted. Make
this a habit and soon your inbox will be very
organized too.
Here are the steps that I use in Gmail, you
might have similar kinds of options in your
own email service...
1. Open the email
2. Select the "More" button at top of the inbox
3. Select "Create filter" from the drop-down list
4. Leave fields as shown (I remove the part
before @ in any email shown) and select
"Create filter with this search"
5. Tick these check-boxes: "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)",
"Apply the label:" (you will need to create a "New
label"), "Never send it to Spam" and "Also apply filter
to matching conversations"
6. Select the "Create filter" button
Once this filter is created, every time I get an
email from that person's email address it will go
into that specified folder.
The most important thing to note here... it will
never go to spam and I'll be certain that it's from
a source I requested.
Let's test this...
Create a filter for this Forward Steps email
(the one that you have open right now), by
following the 6 steps above.
Done?
Now all Forward Steps emails to you will never go
to your spam and you'll be able to find them all
easily under one label in your inbox. Cool huh?
If you get stuck, I found a good YouTube video here
which will show you exactly how to do this.
Once you've done this a couple times, you'll become
very quick at it. It takes me seconds to do this, when
I subscribe to anything new or get an email from
a new person.
Ages ago, I had also created this special page.
